WHAT JAMES HAMILTON HAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS RELEASE:
THE OSMONDS ‘One Bad Apple (Illegal Mix)’ (Polydor DONNY 1)
On strictly limited white label promo but a surefire pop smash should it ever be released commercially, this gimmicky 103⅓-102½-102-103-0bpm modern scratch mix style total revamp of their Jackson 5 influenced debut 1971 US smash is punctuated by the “beep beep – toot toot” from Donna Summer’s ‘Bad Girls’ while Matt Bianco’s ‘Wap Bam Boogie’ chant, an hilariously speeded up Little Jimmy Osmond ‘Long Haired Lover From Liverpool’ and Gap Band ‘Oops Up Side Your Head’ synched finale are just some of the many added ingredients – you can see why it’s “illegal”! (Actually, it appears that the Osmonds’ contract stipulates that their material must not be mucked about, too.) Never a hit here (so, thanks to its Jackson 5 similarity, latterly a rare groove!), the jittery 103-100⅔-101bpm original untouched version is included, plus 1972’s gruffly hollered noisily rocky 119-120½bpm ‘Crazy Horses’.

Norman Cook sends greetings from Brighton to point out that it was of course he who created the “illegal mix” of the Osmonds’ ‘One Bad Apple’ (something not made apparent by its plain white label)
