Welcome to the wonderful world of the megamix!!
I was born in the early 1970's and have spent my entire life in Bristol, England. I consider myself very lucky to have been born at that time as it meant that my teenage years coincided with the emergence of the Electro and Hip Hop genres, along with the birth of House music in the late 80's. I totally fell in love with those genres and that passion has remained to this day.
My obsession with megamixes started when I heard the excellent 25 minute mix that Froggy created for The Perfect Beat compilation cassette released in the UK on the 21 Records label in 1983. I bought the album as I was a big fan of the Electro music that I'd heard up to that point, and the megamix was a cassette only bonus track that I was unaware of until I bought it. The mix contained five of the early Tommy Boy Electro tracks and I just loved the way that everything blended together so seemlessly, and even at my young age I appreciated the skill that it took to do that. I then started buying the Street Sounds Electro albums in 1984 where the tracks were again expertly mixed together and I was totally hooked on the megamix from that point on.
My bootleg collection started in early 1987 when I chanced upon a record named PROMO-3 in the racks of Tony's Records, which was half way up Park Street in Bristol. That was the go-to-spot for all of the U.S. Hip Hop and Dance music imports in Bristol at the time. The label simply said 'PROMO-3' and had the words 'FOR D.J. ONLY' on it so I was intrigued. I asked at the counter and they said that it was a bootleg megamix of some current Dance and Pop tracks. What was a bootleg I asked myself? Exactly which tracks were on it? I took a punt (as I've done countless times since), handed over my money and excitedly took the bus home to play it. I'd never bought a bootleg record before and was slightly nervous that I could get into trouble if the police found out!! Anyway, when I played it I was blown away by the fact that so many tracks had been mixed together in the 17 minutes that it lasted (remember, at this time I was used to hearing the Electro series mixes where there are only 4 or 5 full length tracks in a 25 minute mix) and I absolutely loved the way that it had been constructed and how seemlessly everything blended together. I went to Tony's again the next weekend and came across a record that had BITS & PIECES 87 on it along with the words 'DYNAMITE MIX' so I knew that this was another bootleg megamix record. I bought it and was once again blown away by the way that everything was blended together so perfectly. I feel fortunate that these were the first two bootleg megamixes I bought as they are still in my top 20 favourite mixes ever. I generally prefer bootleg megamixes to legal ones as the D.J.'s have no restrictions on what they can include in the mix, and they also have free range on how the records are blended together which allows their own style to shine through. I'm not saying that legal megamixes can't be as good, but generally the D.J.'s are told which records to mix by the record company, which can restrict their creativity.
I have listed below some of my favourite megamixes that I bought in the early days of collecting as they play an important part in my journey towards creating the web site that you are now looking at.
The cassette version of this release contained the first megamix that I heard and it blew me away. I love all of the early Tommy Boy singles and this mix contains five of the best. It was created by one of the U.K.'s first mixing D.J.'s Froggy and was only released on vinyl in single sided promo format.

TRACKS I CAN IDENTIFY IN THE MIX - I have only listed the ones that have prolonged elements or have a short sample repeated multiple times:

This release contains another megamix of early Tommy Boy tracks and is worth buying for the cover alone as real B-Boys recreate the Tommy Boy logo. This mix was created by a team named 3-D, which consisted of Ralph D'Agostino, Tom Musto and Tommy Sozzi. It was also released as a stand alone 12" single with three different versions of the megamix, details of which can be found here.

The Ultimate Trax series sadly only consisted of three double albums between 1986 and 1987, but they stood out from other compilations because each one had a 'Battle Of The D.J.'s' megamix included. This pitted two D.J.'s against each other to come up with the best mix using the same tracks. My favourite of these mixes is on Volume 1 and it's by the U.K.'s very own 1987 D.M.C. World Mixing Champ Chad Jackson. The way that the mix was put together is genius and the transition from 'Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble' to 'Just Buggin' at 01:14 is perfection due to the way that the lyrics from one track match up with the next track.

SIDE D MIX: BATTLE OF THE D.J.'S Volume 1
TRACKS I CAN IDENTIFY IN THE MIX - I have only listed the ones that have prolonged elements or have a short sample repeated multiple times:
Word Of Mouth featuring D.J. Cheese - Coast To Coast (1986);
D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble (1986);
Whistle - (Nothing Serious) Just Buggin' (1985);
Spyder-D featuring D.J. Doc - I Can't Wait (To Rock The Mike) (1986);
Harlequin Four's - Set It Off (1985)
The Upfront series lasted for 12 volumes between 1986 and 1989, but only six of them contained megamixes. My favourite mix from the series is on Volume 2 and is another genius creation by Chad Jackson where he matches up the lyrics from two different tracks to mix between them.

SIDE D MIX: DISCO MIX CLUB Hip Hop Megamix
TRACKS I CAN IDENTIFY IN THE MIX - I have only listed the ones that have prolonged elements or have a short sample repeated multiple times:

M.C. Boob aka Steady B - Bring The Beat Back (1986);
Eric B. & Rakim - Eric B. Is President (1986);
Salt-N-Pepa - I'll Take Your Man (1986)
The D.M.C. monthly mixes were impossible to get hold of by us mere mortals at the time of release, as they were only available to registered working D.J.'s, but you did get to hear the mixes on the radio if you listened to the right stations. When I first heard Chad Jackson's 1987 end of year Hip Hop mix it knocked my socks off, as it's possibly the rawest Hip Hop mix ever made!! Fortunately, I was able to get hold of the complete D.M.C. mix collection from 1984 to 1995 when D.J.'s started selling off their vinyl in the late 90's/early 2000's due to CD's becoming the format of choice.

L.L. Cool J - I'm Bad (1987)
The first two Hip Hop compilations released by Music Of Life Records contained a megamix created by D.J. and label owner Simon Harris. The second album in the series was named 'Hard As Hell' and only contained tracks by U.K. artists, which was very rare at that time as everything was normally U.S. focused. It is the best U.K. Hip Hop compilation ever in my opinion and the megamix that Simon created is a real banger. I love the way that he uses sound effects to mix between the tracks, which was a method he utilised to great effect on some of his other megamixes and remixes as well.

This is a fantastic mix of Hip Hop and Electro tracks by The World Class Wreckin' Cru's Dr. Dre (at least that is my conclusion as to who created the mix). The mix has multiple tracks playing at any one time, which is a style that Dre employed on the intro's of the mixtapes that he made for Steve Yano which were sold at the Roadium Swap Meet in L.A..

These are more than just your average remixes, they are really megamixes based around a single track. My two favourites from this series are 'New Kids On The Block - You Got It' and 'Martika - More Than You Know' which were done solo by Jason Davies of my favourite mixing team The Mixbusters.

Record Mirror was a weekly music magazine that I bought religously throughout the late 70's to the early 90's when it went out of business. Occasionally they would give away free 7" records sellotaped to the cover and three of them contained megamixes. They are all great mixes.
